International Women's Day

Regarding this celebration, I spoke to Linda Scott, FCPA, CTA, FCCA & QFA, & Partner at Amatino and asked her the following questions regarding her career in accountancy and her lifestyle.

Linda, tell us how did you begin your career in accountancy?

I went to college when my then youngest child was 4 and he went to school. I needed to find a career which would support my family. I was good at figures, so I took up a fulltime accounting technician course in Cavan College, it was known as the college of knowledge then!

Tell us about your qualifications?

I started with Accounting Technicians Ireland, which gave me exemptions for CPA which was being promoted with Cavan College at the time, this suited me as I was working fulltime and studying weekends in Griffith College, I soon discovered I preferred tax (CTA) and completed the Institute of Taxation, tough but great course in UCD at weekends. I was still working fulltime. I then completed the QFA course, as this gave me valuable information for discussing and planning financials with clients and worked well with the tax exams.

What is your advice to people starting a career in accountancy?

My advice to anyone starting is to make sure it is for you, work hard and get through the exams fast. I did mine in 18 months. It was tough but it worked for me as I had a young family at the time.

What is your advice to companies facing Brexit?

I would advise businesses to make plans, work out how Brexit will affect your business. Do you export or import with the UK? The tariffs are already in place so you can check what additional costs would apply to your imports. Can you source your products elsewhere in the EU and or what other markets are available to you for exporting.

What is your greatest strength?

Positive mindset.

How do you handle stress and pressure?

Don’t know what that is?? Kidding. Love exercise of all types, cycling, swimming, yoga, circuits and a small amount of running/walking, it keeps your mental state right, you can tackle any problem when your mindset is positive.

What strategies do you use to motivate a team?

Never ask anyone to do a job you wouldn’t do yourself, I work with my team, I will take on any job that needs doing. I don’t see myself as in charge of the team, but part of the team. I don’t believe in the iron rod approach more the carrot and stick.

What is your favourite past time?

Exercise first and foremost, I just love it.

What irritates you?

People who are always looking for the handy way out, they are normally the taker and never the giver.

What is your motto for life?

Live life to the fullest while you can.

Favourite holiday destination?

Cuba.

Tell us an interesting fact about you?

I have cycled the 200k Croagh Patrick to Ballinagh challenge for the last 3 years.

How many countries have you visited?

13.

If you won the lotto what would you do?

Retire from work and travel.

Name something you do everyday?

Everyday some form of exercise, except Friday the only day I take off.

Thank you Linda for your participation.
